Samsung wants your smart fridges to become billboards. Or at least it seems so. The company is reportedly showing advertisements on its Family Hub range. The South Korean conglomerate also confirmed in a statement that it is running a pilot programme in the United States to display ads, extending online advertising right into the kitchen.

The pilot is reportedly rolling out via a software update to select Family Hub models. The company is showing Ads on the smart fridge’s Cover Screen when set to Weather, Colour, or Daily Board themes. Essentially showing up when the fridge is idle. Samsung says the move is about “adding everyday value” for customers. However, many users on social media see it differently, calling it yet another intrusion of ads into spaces that used to be ad-free.

In a statement to Android Authority the company noted that “As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen that value, we are conducting a pilot programme to offer promotions and curated advertisements on certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerator models in the U.S. market.”

According to Samsung, the pilot, which began in September 2025, will run for several months, with any wider rollout depending on how customers respond.

For users who really want to avoid ads, there are some workarounds. If the Cover Screen is set to Art Mode or personal photo albums, no ads will appear. Of course, disconnecting the fridge from the internet would also block them, but that would also disable many of the fridge’s smart features.
