Investigation Begins into Controversial Remarks by Wimal Weerawansa

The Central Criminal Investigation Bureau has commenced an investigation into controversial remarks made by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa at a recent meeting of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in Anuradhapura.

The investigation concerns whether remarks made by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa during the meeting amounted to contempt of court.

The meeting of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was held in Anuradhapura town on 12 September under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

A Colombo Magistrate had ordered Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya to conduct an investigation into the matter. Accordingly, it is reported that the investigation has commenced on the instructions issued by the Inspector General of Police.

Wimal Weerawansa is expected to be summoned to the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau in the coming days to have his statement recorded.
