23-Apr-2026.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to complete the payment of the Rs. 500,000 compensation approved by the government for partially damaged houses affected by Cyclone Ditwah, except in highly complicated cases, by the end of May.
The President issued this directive during a progress review meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat on April 22, which focused on compensation payments and the handover of new houses to those whose homes were partially or fully damaged by the cyclone.
Special attention was also given to the progress of providing Rs. 5 million compensation to families whose houses were completely destroyed, either for constructing a new house or purchasing one.
The President further instructed officials to expedite the release of these funds. The meeting also discussed relocating people currently living in camps into temporary housing until permanent homes are provided.
The President directed authorities to identify suitable locations and complete the process without delay. Discussions were also held on relocating families living in high-risk zones and on constructing housing schemes for those who have not received compensation to purchase new homes.
