Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe has warned that the severe heat currently prevailing in the country due to atmospheric changes could cause serious health impacts, urging the public to act with heightened caution.

He made these remarks while addressing the media in Colombo regarding the rising temperatures.

Dr. Jasinghe stated that in countries such as Sri Lanka located close to the equator, the sun being directly overhead and the increasing humidity levels have resulted in a significant rise in ambient temperature. He warned that intensifying heat could cause serious harm to human health, and therefore it is essential for the public to remain vigilant during these days.

He further noted that children, the elderly, patients suffering from chronic illnesses and pregnant mothers could face severe impacts, and special attention should be given to them. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may lead to dehydration, heat stroke and paralysis-like conditions. He especially advised the public to avoid moving around in the sun between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.

He also stated that those working outdoors may continue their duties with proper protection. Even if one does not feel thirsty, drinking water frequently can help prevent dehydration. People are advised to stay in cool, shaded areas. Parents are urged not to leave children alone inside vehicles and to keep them under supervision. If symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, excessive sweating or weakness appear, they should rest in a cool, shaded place.

If such symptoms persist, immediate medical attention should be sought from a qualified doctor. Wearing light-coloured, loose clothing is recommended. He also advised that children should avoid outdoor play during this period.
