Customs officers have recovered narcotics valued at more than Rs. 67.53 million after opening and inspecting 11 suspicious postal parcels sent from overseas to the Colombo Central Mail Exchange.

The parcels had been dispatched from eight countries. Hidden inside them were more than 3.1 kilograms of 'Kush' cannabis, 2,395 grams of ecstasy tablets and 33 grams of a drug known as 'Mandy'.

The suspicious parcels had been identified over the past few months during special surveillance operations conducted by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Unit, which monitors postal consignments arriving from overseas.

The parcels had been kept in the custody of Customs officials until the intended recipients came forward to collect them. However, as no one came to claim the parcels within the stipulated period, Customs officers decided to open and inspect them in the presence of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau.

The investigation revealed that the parcels had been sent from Thailand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany.

More than 3.1 kilograms of 'Kush' cannabis, with an estimated market value of Rs. 30.5 million, were recovered from parcels sent from Thailand, the United States and the United Kingdom.

In addition, 2,395 grams of ecstasy tablets were seized from parcels originating in Belgium, France, Canada and Germany, while 33 grams of 'Mandy' were recovered from a parcel sent from the Netherlands.

The largest quantity of narcotics was recovered from a parcel originating in Belgium. The ecstasy tablets found in that parcel weighed 2,202 grams and alone were estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 33.03 million.

The recovered narcotics have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations and legal proceedings.
