Halifax city has given approval for a big housing project at the Mic Mac Mall site. The plan is to change the mall’s parking area into a new residential neighbourhood. In the first phase, there will be about 2,800 flats built in tall towers, mid-rise buildings, and a special care home.

Later, the project could grow to 4,600 units, bringing nearly 8,600 new people to the area over the next 10–20 years.

The project will also add community facilities like a public park with playgrounds and sports courts, walking and cycling paths, and some commercial space which may include a grocery store.

Early construction will focus on a new bus terminal, a 17 storey care facility with 400 rooms, and a 13 storey extension to the mall with parking, offices, and entertainment space.

Some councillors and local residents raised worries about the size of the project, limited green space, and whether water and sewer systems can handle the extra load. Halifax Water has said that the developer will pay for the required upgrades. Despite concerns, the Harbour East – Marine

Drive Community Council approved the plan, noting that the towers will be placed along the highway to reduce impact on nearby neighbourhoods.

In future, another proposal for nearby land could add 1,000 more homes. Overall, this is one of Halifax’s largest housing projects, aiming to balance growth with community needs.
