3 cats, 1 dog dead after house fire in Vanier

A fire in the basement of a home in Vanier on the morning of Jan 20 killed four pets and displaced four people. Firefighters were called to a small bungalow on Dieppe Street at 2:33 a.m. after residents reported smoke and flames.
All four residents and one dog had escaped uninjured by the time firefighters arrived, but they reported another dog and three cats were still inside.
During a search of the home firefighters located the unconscious animals. Their attempts to resuscitate the pets were unsuccessful.
The fire was declared under control within 38 minutes, and firefighters began pulling down sections of the ceiling and window casings to extinguish remaining hotspots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
