23-Aug-2026.
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan, including Tokyo, injuring 23 people mostly with minor injuries. The quake, originating in Ibaraki prefecture at 70 km depth, caused no tsunami threat.
It disrupted train services but left Shinkansen operations normal. Infrastructure suffered minor damage, including a ruptured water pipe and brief blackouts affecting 460 homes. The government formed a task force to assess damage. No nuclear facilities reported issues. The quake follows a deadly magnitude 7.1 quake in Kyushu last month.
