Three Agreements Exchanged in the Presence of President and Indian Defence Minister

As an important part of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s official visit to Sri Lanka, three new agreements signed between the two countries were exchanged as an important step towards further expanding bilateral cooperation.
The agreements were exchanged on 9 September 2026 at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
The three agreements included an agreement on the modernisation of D70 guns for the Sri Lanka Air Force, an agreement on academic cooperation between India’s National Defence College and Sri Lanka’s National Defence College, and an agreement on bilateral cooperation between the Sri Lanka National Cadet Corps and the Indian National Cadet Corps.
The three agreements were exchanged by Deputy Minister of Defence, retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, and Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha.
Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to Indian Peace Keeping Force personnel who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties at the Indian Peace Keeping Force Memorial in Colombo.
In a message posted in this regard, he stated that the nation would never forget their supreme sacrifice and that they would remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
Meanwhile, the Defence Minister received a ceremonial welcome with military honours when he visited the Ministry of Defence.
During the visit, he also met and held discussions with senior defence force commanders. He delivered an address there on the topic, “India–Sri Lanka Maritime Cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region – Civilisational Partners with an Interconnected Destiny.”
He also participated in special Buddhist religious ceremonies organised at the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo.
After completing his main engagements in Colombo, the Defence Minister is scheduled to visit the Seetha Amman Temple in the Nuwara Eliya District on September 10 and participate in religious observances.
