Tamil-speaking political parties to seek meeting with President

Tamil-speaking political parties have decided to seek a meeting with the President to discuss a range of issues of national importance affecting Tamil-speaking communities.

Following the proposed meeting with the President, the parties also plan to meet the Opposition Leader and members of the diplomatic community in Colombo to exchange views on these issues.

Leaders and representatives of the All Ceylon People's Congress, Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), Ceylon Workers' Congress, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Democratic Tamil National Alliance and the Tamil Progressive Alliance met at the Parliamentary Complex recently to discuss future cooperation.

MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has been appointed as the coordinator of the parliamentary group.

The six Tamil-speaking political parties, which earlier this month announced their decision to work together, reaffirmed their commitment to jointly address issues affecting Tamil-speaking people.

They said that while each party would continue to maintain its own political identity, policies and independence, they had agreed to cooperate constructively on matters where common ground exists in the interests of the Tamil-speaking community.

The parties also said they intend to engage with the President on a number of nationally significant issues affecting Tamil-speaking people.

Following that meeting, they plan to hold discussions with the Opposition Leader and members of the diplomatic corps in Sri Lanka with the aim of exchanging views and building broader consensus through constructive democratic dialogue.

Expressing confidence that the President would respond positively to their request for talks, the parties reiterated their commitment to continued cooperation on agreed issues in pursuit of justice, lasting peace and a durable political solution.
