Sri Lanka and Germany Discuss Economic Cooperation

A meeting between Tobias Pierlings, Head of the Foreign Economic Policy Division for South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, and Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri was held May 27 at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The discussion focused on further strengthening economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and Germany.
Speaking during the meeting, Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri expressed appreciation for the continuous support and cooperation extended by the German Government towards Sri Lanka’s development and economic progress.
Pierlings also highlighted the significance of the “Sri Lanka-German Business Conference 2026,” which is being organised by the German Industry and Commerce Representative Office in Sri Lanka.
Approximately 350 senior stakeholders, including policymakers, business leaders, industry associations and experts representing strategic sectors from both countries, are expected to participate in the three-day conference.
He stated that the conference would serve as an important platform to deepen bilateral economic relations and generate mutual benefits for both nations.
Special attention was also paid to the growth of Sri Lanka’s information technology sector, which continues to make a significant contribution to the country’s export economy.
Both sides agreed to work together to further strengthen technology and innovation-based cooperation.
Discussions were also held regarding Sri Lanka’s skills development and vocational training sectors, with particular focus on the contribution made by the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute towards technical education and human resource development.
German Ambassador to Sri Lanka Dr. Felix Neumann, officials from the German Embassy, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Sagarika Bogahawatte and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism also participated in the event.
