The Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) has urged the government to immediately conduct Provincial Council elections by addressing outstanding legal obstacles and implementing recommendations submitted by the Attorney General’s Department to the Parliamentary Select Committee.

TELO spokesperson Surendran, in a statement, said that removing the 2017 Provincial Council Elections Amendment Act and reverting to the earlier electoral system under the 1988 law would create an opportunity to hold elections without delay.

He criticized the government’s position that a new amendment—particularly regarding increased representation for women and youth—must be drafted first, calling it a time-wasting exercise.

The statement further noted that the Attorney General’s Department itself has recommended reverting to the previous electoral framework. It also pointed out that failure of the delimitation commission to submit its report on time has made full implementation of the 2017 amendments unfeasible, strengthening the case for reverting to the earlier system.
