Cabinet Paper Being Prepared to Raise Judges' Retirement Age

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has announced that preliminary steps have commenced to prepare a Cabinet paper on increasing the retirement age of judges.

The Minister confirmed the move amid recent public discussion that the Government was considering raising the retirement age for members of the judiciary.

He said he had been instructed to prepare the relevant Cabinet paper and that the necessary follow-up action is currently under way.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that if a proposal to increase the retirement age of judges is submitted to the Cabinet, the Government would be prepared to hold a comprehensive discussion on the matter.
