Ban on Plastic Bottles and Food Containers from April 1

A ban on plastic bottles and food containers will take effect from 1 April to protect children’s health and the environment, Minister of Trade, Food Security and Cooperative Development Vasantha Samarasinghe said.

Retailers have been encouraged to charge extra for shopping bags, reducing usage by 50%. Producers of plastic goods have been given a six-month transition period.
