Arrest of Hizbullah linked to intelligence advice by Suresh Sale: Lawyer Nuwan Bopage
11-Jun-2026.
Attorney-at-law Nuwan Bopage has claimed that ongoing investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks are increasingly politically motivated rather than focused on delivering justice to victims.
In a social media post dated 9 June 2026, he alleged that former intelligence chief Suresh Sale had provided advice leading to the detention of Haji Hizbullah, who was accused of being involved in the attack, noting that his wife was pregnant at the time of arrest.
He further argued that intelligence agencies globally have historically been involved in politically driven operations, citing examples from the Cold War era and post-9/11 geopolitical interventions.
Bopage also alleged a pattern of misuse of counter-terrorism laws in Sri Lanka, including past incidents involving detentions and enforced disappearances, and questioned the fairness of current legal proceedings.
He called for judicial processes to ensure genuine justice for victims rather than politically motivated narratives.
