A/L Candidates Must Act in Accordance with the Law: Commissioner General of Examinations

The General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination is a competitive examination that will have a significant bearing on the future of candidates. Therefore, all candidates must act with great care and responsibility and strictly adhere to the Examinations Act and the laws of the country, Commissioner General of Examinations Indika Kumari Liyanage said.
She made these remarks at a media briefing held at the Department of Examinations on August 8, 2026.
She further said:
“The 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination will commence tomorrow, Monday (10), and continue until September 5. All arrangements for conducting the examination have been completed.
“A total of 2,532 examination centres, 326 coordination centres and 32 regional collection centres have been established across the country. A total of 264,496 school candidates and 107,814 private candidates have applied for this year’s examination. Accordingly, 372,310 candidates are expected to sit the examination.
“All additional classes, seminars and other activities related to the examination, including the discussion or distribution of model questions through print or electronic media, have been prohibited from midnight on August 4 until the conclusion of the examination.
“Security and emergency arrangements have been coordinated with the Sri Lanka Police, the armed forces, the Disaster Management Centre, the Department of Meteorology, the National Building Research Organisation, the Ceylon Electricity Board, transport services and health authorities.
“Admission cards for school candidates have already been sent through the respective principals, while admission cards for private candidates have been sent to their registered addresses.
“Candidates must ensure that their signatures on the admission cards have been duly verified. They are also requested to bring an accepted form of identification to the examination centre. The National Identity Card, a valid driving licence or a valid passport will be accepted as proof of identity.
“Candidates who have lost their admission cards can download a duplicate through the official website of the Department of Examinations. However, they must ensure that the required signature has been duly verified before taking the admission card to the examination centre.
“Candidates are requested to carefully check the revised examination timetable, including whether each paper is scheduled for the morning or afternoon session, and arrive at the designated examination centre at least one hour before the commencement of the examination.
“Mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth devices and other electronic equipment, as well as notes, books and other unauthorised items, are strictly prohibited inside examination halls. Candidates are advised to comply with all examination rules and instructions issued by examination officials throughout the examination period.
“The G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination is a competitive examination that will have an important bearing on the future of candidates. Therefore, all candidates must act responsibly and with great care and comply with the Examinations Act and the laws of the country.
“Candidates should ensure that they are able to face the examination calmly and arrive at the examination centre on time on each examination day. Once a paper is completed, candidates should prepare for the following day’s examination. I therefore kindly request candidates to return home safely after each examination.
“I appeal to everyone to extend their fullest cooperation to ensure that the examination is conducted successfully,” she said.
