Why Have Government Members Not Been Nominated? – MP Shanakiyan
07-Feb-2026.
Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi questioned the government on why nominations from the ruling side have still not been submitted to the proposed committee on Provincial Council elections.
Speaking in Parliament, he said the government had proposed the committee with the intention of postponing Provincial Council elections, and the appointment of members had again been delayed.
The proposal to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to study and make recommendations on Provincial Council elections was approved in December, with the committee required to submit its report within three months. Opposition members, including Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, Mano Ganesan, Nizam Kariapper and Ranjith Madduma Bandara, have already been nominated.
However, no names have yet been submitted by the ruling party. He urged the government to explain the delay, stating that Provincial Council elections must be held promptly to resolve multiple issues and to demonstrate progress on internal mechanisms for addressing the ethnic question.
