United People’s Power (SJB) MP Ajith P. Perera questioned why the government could not provide security to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, when even after the death of Rohana Wijeweera, security for his family has been ensured by every successive government.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, Perera said that while laws removing special privileges for former presidents should be followed, Mahinda’s basic right to personal security as a citizen cannot be denied.

He stated that although Mahinda’s pension and privileges could be revoked, weakening his security would set a dangerous precedent.

“Since he provided leadership to end the war, all past, present, and future governments have a duty to ensure his protection. Withholding his security as a form of political revenge is wrong,” Perera said.

He also criticized the government for failing to take meaningful action on the Easter Sunday bombings, noting that key conspirators and witnesses have not been revealed despite repeated promises.
