We are ashamed of Anura’s actions – MP Dayasiri
26-Dec-2025.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is attempting to appoint a loyal individual as Auditor General to manipulate audit processes and enable the looting of funds allocated for losses caused by Cyclone Ditwah, stated United People’s Power MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo on Dec 24, he said the Auditor General post has been vacant for eight months.
Traditionally, the most senior official in the Audit Department is appointed, a practice followed by previous governments without interference.
However, the President proposed three individuals to the Constitutional Council, all of whom were rejected. One was a university friend with no relevant experience, another was a controversial figure within the Audit Department, and the third was a retired military officer with only ten months of experience.
Losses from Cyclone Ditwah are estimated at LKR 1,860 billion, and LKR 500 billion has been approved through a supplementary estimate. A permanent Auditor General is essential for overseeing this spending.
He accused the President of trying to delay appointments until the terms of three civil members of the Constitutional Council expire, so that preferred individuals can be appointed to facilitate misuse of funds.
He stated that a President who came to power promising to catch thieves is now trying to protect them, and urged the President not to interfere with the appointment of an independent Auditor General.
