UNP proposes 16 measures to resolve public hardships
01-Dec-2025.
All parties must unite, setting aside political differences, to protect the country and its people from the present crisis. There is no alternative path, said United National Party Chairman Vajira Abeywardena.
As weather conditions begin returning to normal, the UNP is putting forward 16 proposals for the government to address the grave challenges faced by the public, he said.
He made these remarks at a media briefing held at the UNP headquarters on November 30.
He added:
All parties must unite and work harmoniously in the face of the present crisis. The country has faced similar natural disasters in the past, and those situations were managed effectively. The government should view these past experiences as lessons and seek advice and cooperation from all stakeholders.
A total of 14,022 Grama Niladhari divisions across the country have been affected. The government must continue to enforce the emergency regulations. In order to safeguard the country and its people from this crisis, political differences must be set aside and united action must be taken. There is no other alternative.
As weather conditions return to normal, the government must promptly address the severe problems faced by the public, and in this regard the UNP proposes sixteen measures including full reporting on damages in the 8,000 affected Grama Niladhari divisions, a grace period for all affected industries, a six-month grace period for commercial bank loans and lease repayments, immediate compensation for partially damaged houses, a firm announcement of compensation for fully damaged houses, insurance facilities for farmers, delegating authority for issuing house-reconstruction permits to Divisional Secretariats and GN divisions, assistance for purification of drinking water supply, doubling allowances for Samurdhi and Aswesuma beneficiaries, ensuring food security, issuing a circular granting special allowances to public servants, creating conditions that enable public officials and the armed forces to perform effectively, and other related proposals.
