Unaffected schools to resume on 16 December

Except for the schools listed separately, all other schools will reopen on Dec 16. However, the third-term examination will not be held. Only Grade 11 students will be given pre-exam practice sessions, according to Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa.
Unconducted subjects of the GCE Advanced Level examination will be held from 12 January next year. Teachers, principals, and non-academic staff must report to duty on 15 December.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Education Ministry in Colombo on 09-12-2025, he further said:
After reviewing the situation with all provinces, 9,929 out of 10,076 schools nationwide will reopen on Dec 16.
147 schools in disaster-affected areas remain unable to reopen. Any changes arising from further provincial confirmations will be officially announced.
Principals, teachers, and non-academic staff of all schools reopening on 16 December must report to duty on 15 December. Flexibility will be provided regarding uniforms for students and staff in affected areas.
The second segment of the third term for 2025 will run from 16 to 22 December. Schools will close from 23 to 28 December for Christmas. Classes will resume from 29 to 31 December.
Muslim schools will function until Jan 2, 2026.
Unconducted A/L examination subjects will begin on Jan 12, 2026. Further notices will be issued by the Commissioner-General of Examinations.
The 2026 school year will begin on 5 January 2026. The GCE Ordinary Level exam will be held in February as scheduled, and schools will close from Feb 14 to Mar 2 to facilitate the examination.
