A delegation from the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture will arrive in Sri Lanka on June 15 to conduct nationwide monitoring activities.
The Subcommittee, established in 2007, consists of 25 independent experts and focuses on preventing torture in member states through monitoring, guidance, and preventive measures.
The delegation will remain in the country until the 24th and is expected to meet representatives of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and engage in broad discussions with stakeholders, including police and civil society organisations, on the prevention of torture and related practices.
The delegation will also conduct field visits to locations where there is a risk of torture, and is expected to hold a dedicated meeting with civil society representatives.
