The government does not possess the experience or capacity required to formulate a new education policy and must withdraw the currently implemented policy.

The government should seek advice from us on policy formulation, said Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila.

He made these remarks while addressing the media after meeting with the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiriya Chapters on January 12 to discuss the new education policy.

He further stated that the new education policy has been implemented in a manner that contradicts the country’s Buddhist culture. He warned that if the plan is implemented, the younger generation would drift away from religion and follow their own paths, eventually leading to the disappearance of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

He added that merely removing the controversial content from textbooks or the resignation of Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya would not resolve the issue. He insisted that the government must immediately withdraw the newly introduced education policy and engage in broad-based discussions with all stakeholders.

The government must hold discussions with them regarding the new education policy, and they remain firm that a nationally oriented education policy should be formulated, he said.
