The Law Is Being Enforced Without Bias; Says Prime Minister Harini

“How can one describe as anti-democratic the enforcement of law applied equally to all, without discrimination? We did not come to power targeting the opposition; we came to power with the people as our focus. We will fulfil the pledges given to the people within our term of office,” Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated.

Speaking during the debate on the Second Reading of the Appropriation Bill for 2026, held in Parliament on 8 November 2025, she made the above remarks.

She further said:

“The opposition accuses the government of acting against democracy, of placing democracy under threat, and of weakening the education system.

The opposition must show where democracy is under threat. When the law is enforced impartially and applied uniformly to all, how can that be labelled anti-democratic?

We have no reason to abolish the multi-party system. It is due to the conduct of the opposition that the education system becomes weakened. We did not assume power with the opposition as our target; we assumed power with the people as our focus.

All communities have been included in the Appropriation Bill presented by the President. Considering the country’s financial situation, relief has been provided to all sectors. Increased allocations have been made for the restructuring of the public and education sectors.

We never told the people that we would fulfil all promises within a single year. Promises can be fulfilled only after stabilising the economy.

The people of this country are now well informed on political and economic matters. It is the opposition that acts with narrow political motives.”
