Tamils have many problems; we will fulfill our promises: Minister Harshan Nanayakkara
24-Aug-2025.

We acknowledge Tamils face many problems in this country. We will definitely fulfill the promises we made in our election manifesto. The United Nations is our international friend—we always need its support, said Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshan Nanayakkara.
Speaking in Parliament on Augst 22, he said:
It is wrong to say Sinhala governments never listen to Tamils. The NPP does not behave that way. We see all equally—regardless of ethnicity or gender. We pay attention to the North too. But why northern politicians remain fearful, I do not know.
We cannot solve all Tamil issues immediately, but steps are being taken. Do not accuse us unfairly. We have 4 years left—we will deliver our promises.
Wars begin in people’s minds, and peace must also come from minds. We must not let the country fall into chaos again. Some progress has already been made.
On PTA: A committee under Attorney General Harsha Gunarathna was appointed in February. Its final draft is ready. We will amend the law in line with international definitions of terrorism.
On long-term prisoners: Yes, this is an issue. A committee has been formed to review cases of those in prison for long periods. Its report will go to Cabinet.
We reject racist politics. Any reforms will be done without harming any community. Next year, concrete changes will be seen.
We accept UNHRC’s recommendations on reconciliation—unlike past governments. We will implement them.
On Ranil Wickremesinghe’s arrest: This shows judicial independence. We do not interfere—the law acts impartially, regardless of social status.
The UN is our international friend; we need its help. But more importantly, we will do what is right for the people. Tamils’ problems are real, and all promises made will be delivered during our term, the Minister said.
