TNA’s Acting General Secretary and spokesperson M.A. Sumanthiran stated that the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) will not sign a letter prepared by the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) to the UNHRC.

A political and constitutional affairs meeting on August 2 in Jaffna, led by C.V. Sivagnanam, decided that any international communication must follow party consensus. TNPF had independently circulated the draft letter to ITAK MPs for signature, bypassing the agreed discussion process.

Sumanthiran emphasized that ITAK has secured administration in 32 of 45 majority-Tamil local councils and is second only to the ruling NPP in the number of councils won. The party reaffirmed its support for a new constitution and early provincial elections while opposing any replacement for the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
