Suresh Salley resumed eating after assessing the situation: Cabinet Spokesman
03-Jul-2026.
Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has said that former intelligence officer Suresh Salley decided to resume taking food after assessing the situation, adding that his health continues to be closely monitored by a medical team.
The Minister made these remarks during the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department in Colombo on July 1.
He said Salley has ended his hunger strike and resumed taking food orally.
During the period of his hunger strike, essential nutrition and fluids were continuously provided through nasal feeding and intravenous medical treatment.
As a result, his nutritional status and overall health were not adversely affected.
The Minister said Salley's decision to resume normal eating had made his treatment easier.
He also revealed that medical examinations had identified certain previously undiagnosed health conditions, for which appropriate treatment is now being provided.
Jayatissa said that irrespective of whether Salley has lodged any complaints, the medical team continues to monitor his condition carefully, as they would for any patient.
"He is an intelligence officer and has the ability to understand the circumstances. Based on that understanding, he decided to resume taking food," the Minister said.
