Ahead of the 60th UN Human Rights Council sessions, Sri Lanka officially announced it would not accept external accountability mechanisms, arguing they would disrupt ongoing national reconciliation efforts and divide communities.

Sri Lanka’s Permanent Mission in Geneva responded to UN High Commissioner Volker Türk’s recent report, highlighting local measures such as:

• Strengthening reconciliation programs

• Repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and introducing a new counter-terrorism law

• Establishing offices for Missing Persons, Reparations, and Reconciliation

• Planning a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and an Independent Prosecutor’s Office

The government reaffirmed its commitment to building a multi-ethnic, inclusive society without racism or extremism but rejected international oversight.
