Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated in New Delhi that Sri Lanka will never allow its soil to be used in any way that could threaten India’s security, reaffirming the country’s firm pledge on the matter. She added that India remains a steadfast partner in Sri Lanka’s journey forward.

As part of her official visit to Delhi, Prime Minister Amarasuriya visited the Hindu College of the University of Delhi, where she had studied about three decades ago.

Addressing the students, she said that during her time there she had learned the importance of embracing diversity and asking difficult questions—values that remained etched in her memory of India.

Recalling her first arrival in Delhi, she said she had felt a blend of dreams, uncertainty, hopes, questions, and a slight nervousness, but Delhi had embraced her and made her feel at home. She emphasized that Delhi’s uniqueness lies in its acceptance of diversity.

Expressing her gratitude to her professors, she said:

“They did not just teach me theories; they taught me to think critically, to question, and to never accept injustice as inevitable.”

She reminisced that the college discussions on inequality, feminism, and human development had felt both urgent and essential.

Reflecting on her academic journey, she said:

“Whether I was teaching sociology or researching discontent, social justice, discrimination, or human rights, the intellectual insights I gained at Hindu College have never left me.”

She added that these experiences reinforced a truth that shaped her mind during college — that “knowledge without action is incomplete, and education obliges us to serve those left behind.”

She urged students never to underestimate the power of asking hard questions. The Prime Minister also highlighted the structural nature of the India–Sri Lanka partnership, saying:

“Our cooperation is not temporary but structural — not a convenience of today, but a necessity for tomorrow.”

She reiterated that India continues to be a steadfast partner in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, offering vital assistance during crises, and supporting Sri Lanka’s pursuit of stability and growth. Reaffirming her stance, she said:

“Sri Lanka continues to uphold its firm commitment that its soil will never be used in any manner that poses a threat to India’s security.”
