Sri Lanka’s position is that appropriate action must be taken through the United Nations General Assembly against actions that contravene the UN Charter, its fundamental principles and norms, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Development Minister Vijitha Herath said.

He made these remarks in response to a question at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on Jan 4, regarding Sri Lanka’s stance on reports of US military attacks in Venezuela and the arrest and extradition of President Nicolás Maduro to the United States.

The Minister further stated that, in the Venezuela–US matter, actions must strictly adhere to the United Nations Charter and international law, while safeguarding the sovereignty of nations.

All UN member states are bound to act in accordance with accepted legal frameworks, he said, noting that the UN General Assembly is scheduled to convene on Jan 5. Sri Lanka will present proposals urging expedited consideration of the issue and will call for appropriate action against conduct that violates fundamental agreements, principles and norms. This represents the government’s official position.
