With recent shootouts between organized criminal groups, some former government members have sought security protection. Police will assess these requests and take appropriate action, said Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

Speaking at the Cabinet media briefing on November 4, Jayatissa stated that any citizen who feels unsafe may report to the police, who will then review and decide on necessary protection measures.

He confirmed that some opposition MPs have requested protection and even firearm permits, and that police evaluations are ongoing.

While organized crime groups continue to clash violently, no member of the ruling party has reported any security threats or requested weapons, he added.
