Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated that there has been no confirmation that the Power and Energy Minister acted with corrupt intent in the coal matter, and called on the Opposition to reveal evidence if such corruption occurred.

She made these remarks while speaking during the parliamentary debate on the no-confidence motion against Minister Kumara Jayakody held on April 10.

The Prime Minister said that since the Government assumed office, the Opposition has been attempting to portray the Government as corrupt, similar to previous administrations. She acknowledged that it is the Opposition’s duty to highlight Government shortcomings, and that exposing corruption should not be discouraged.

However, she warned that accusations should not be used merely to cover up the Opposition’s own corruption during an anti-corruption administration.

She stated that those who are now most vocal about corruption are often individuals who were directly involved in corruption over many years and attempted to protect corrupt practices.

She said the Government inherited a system filled with corruption mechanisms, and the public elected them specifically to correct these systems. She emphasised that the coal issue is important and that information emerging through investigations is significant.

She added that through audit investigations and related inquiries, the Government can strengthen the public mandate and uncover what truly happened.

She reiterated that there is no confirmed evidence that the Minister acted with corrupt intent, and demanded that proof be presented if such allegations are made.

She assured the public that if corruption is proven, the Government will not hesitate to take action. She said the Government intends to move forward by correcting corrupt systems and will act based on the outcomes of investigations.
