Resolve Youth Association Issues or Face Political Unrest: Former President Ranil Warns

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has urged both parties involved to engage in dialogue and resolve the ongoing disputes within youth associations that have been serving young men and women for over forty years.

If unresolved, he warned, current protests could escalate into a political issue, potentially causing the collapse of the youth association system altogether.

Speaking on August 10 during a special address about the importance of swiftly resolving these disputes, he stated:
"Forty years ago, I started the youth association at the request of young men and women in Sri Lanka. It was intended as a place for youth in villages to gather for recreation, arts, and other activities. I expected the association to nurture and develop youth talents and capabilities, and in many respects, this has been successful. Currently, youth actively participate in various sectors of society.
Over this forty-year period, youth associations have become the primary youth organizations in the country. Some leaders from these associations have entered politics, while others are engaged in business ventures. All have cooperated to advance the programs.
Recently, there were no major problems regarding the amendments proposed by the minister concerning the youth association. However, protests are occurring everywhere. Currently, a national convention is underway, and according to information I have, protests are likely to continue thereafter. If this continues, the youth association will decline. Protesters say the amendments are meant to politicize the youth associations. This issue should not be prolonged but resolved quickly.
Former officials involved in the protests must engage with representatives of the newly appointed district organizations and find a solution satisfactory to all. We all must realize that youth associations should not be used for political purposes. The minister and both groups must work together on this. If not, current protests will turn political, and political parties may intervene, leading to the dissolution of the youth association. What I desire is to protect this youth association. Hence, I decided to issue this brief message."
