Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya declared that the culture of divisive, ethnic-based politics had been brought to an end and that all communities were now united under a shared Sri Lankan identity. She assured that the Provincial Council elections would certainly be held and that there was no reason for doubt or delay.

Speaking during the adjournment debate in Parliament on October 9, the Prime Minister said:

“We have given priority to implementing key promises in the government’s policy statement. Special focus has been placed on eradicating drug abuse, digitizing public administration, and strengthening the rule of law.

We have ended the era of politics based on ethnic division and conflict, bringing all ethnic communities together with pride as Sri Lankans. We are advancing along the democratic path united as one nation. We have identified which promises require priority. It is impossible to implement all pledges at once.

There is no need to repeatedly remind anyone of the condition of the country when we assumed office. The economy was paralyzed. Foreign loans and funding for development projects had stopped. The people gave us a mandate after rejecting those who had bankrupted the country.

The opposition spread fear among the public that the economy would collapse under our rule. But we have overcome that narrative and restored confidence nationally and internationally.

Within one year of assuming power, we have taken numerous initiatives. We strengthened democracy and successfully conducted two major elections peacefully, without imposing curfew laws—a remarkable achievement.

We will definitely hold the Provincial Council elections. There is no need for anyone to doubt it or fear postponement. Once the existing legal complications are resolved, the elections will be held.

We have reaffirmed the independence and principles of the independent commissions and taken steps to form new ones and appoint the most suitable individuals to them.

Reforms have also been introduced in the education sector. Measures are underway to address deficiencies in the school system, expand higher education, and implement the much-demanded educational reform. Starting next year, the curriculum for Grades 1–6 will be restructured, and an Education Commission will be established to oversee the reforms,” she concluded.
