Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya will undertake an official visit to China in October to further strengthen bilateral ties, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayant Fernando announced.
Speaking at the 76th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, organized by the Chinese Embassy in Colombo on September 25, he said:
“President Anurakumara Thisanayake, on behalf of the government and people of Sri Lanka, conveyed congratulations to China. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to recognize the PRC in 1949.
During President Thisanayake’s visit, 15 agreements were signed, including a $500 million grant from China. This was a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.
Sri Lanka continues to uphold the ‘One China’ policy as part of its foreign policy. Despite economic difficulties, Sri Lanka is on the path of progress, and international cooperation is vital. We look forward to continuing strong relations with China,” he said.
Former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and many political leaders were present.
