Police and Criminal Investigation Department officials are allegedly acting subserviently in line with the government’s political objectives, and the government must expose those behind drug trafficking and underworld groups, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa said.

Speaking to the media after attending an event in Colombo, he welcomed the granting of bail to former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne.

He said that despite political interference in investigative structures, the judiciary continues to operate independently. He warned that some members of the LTTE and diaspora organizations are being covertly supported, and the government should prevent such low-level operations.

He further alleged that police and CID officials are acting subserviently to the government’s political aims, which, he said, taints the independence of the police service.

He welcomed the arrest of Sevvanthi, a suspect in the Kanemulle Sanjeev murder investigation. He urged the government to reveal those behind drug trafficking and underworld groups.

He cautioned that it is improper to link all matters to the Rajapaksa family. He appealed to the government to stop criticizing them and instead address the basic problems faced by the people, saying, “I ask the government to fulfill the promises made to the country’s citizens.”
