Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 23 met with Sergio Gor, US President Donald Trump’s Special Representative for South and Central Asia (and nominee for US Ambassador to India), at Sri Lanka’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations in trade, commerce, tourism, and investment.

President Dissanayake emphasized that, following an unprecedented economic crisis, his new government—backed by a strong public mandate—is committed to prioritizing economic growth and fostering a close and active partnership with the US.

He outlined government reforms aimed at ensuring long-term economic stability, including measures to guarantee transparency. Both sides also reviewed progress in ongoing discussions to address trade imbalances, reduce barriers, and establish fair, mutually beneficial trade relations.

The meeting was also attended by Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN, former Chief Justice and President’s Counsel Jayantha Jayasuriya, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
