President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said Sri Lanka is closely monitoring the instability in the Middle East and its indirect impact on the country.
Speaking in Parliament on March 3 he said no war benefits any society and warned of the destructive impact modern weapons and technological advancements can have on social structures.
He urged all parties involved in the conflict to quickly commit to building a peaceful world.
The President said Sri Lanka cannot determine the outcome of Middle Eastern conflicts but must prepare to manage their indirect effects. He called for unity among the government, Parliament, and the public in addressing the crisis.
He confirmed that fuel storage facilities currently hold about 40 days’ supply of petrol and 26 days’ supply of diesel, with additional shipments scheduled. He stressed that fuel purchases are limited by storage capacity.
Plans are underway to increase national fuel storage capacity, including expanding facilities at Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela and renovating oil tanks in Trincomalee.
He also noted that more than one million Sri Lankans work in the Middle East and that Sri Lankan diplomatic missions are providing 24-hour services.
The President expressed hope that peace will soon prevail in the Middle East and said the government is committed to safeguarding the country during this global crisis.
