Sri Lanka’s 80th budget of the post-independence era will be presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance and President Anurakumara Dissanayake on November 6, followed by a special speech.

The government has announced that this year’s budget will be presented with long-term development in mind. It has also been stated that there will be no new tax increases in the budget.

As the country is gradually recovering from the crisis, it is expected that the government will announce certain concessions and economic relief including cost-of-living reductions.

The Appropriation Bill for the 2026 financial year was submitted to Parliament on the 26th of last month for its first reading.

Accordingly, the second reading of the budget will be presented in Parliament today by President and Finance Minister Anurakumara Dissanayake.

The debate on the second reading will be held from tomorrow (8) until December 5. The vote on the second reading will take place on November 14 at 6 p.m.

After that, the committee stage debate will be held for 17 days from November 15 to December 5, with the final vote scheduled for December 5 at 6 p.m.

During this period, except for government holidays and Sundays, the budget debate will take place every day, including Saturdays.

Teachers, doctors, farmers, fishermen, and industrial workers from both public and private sectors have shown special attention to the 2026 budget.
