Politicians are Linked to Drug Network – Deputy Minister Sunil Wattagala

Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Wattagala announced that photographs have surfaced showing politicians connected to the owners of the containers used to transport drug-making chemicals. He stated that these politicians are deeply involved in the drug distribution network.

Speaking in Homagama on September 6, he stressed that if this distribution had continued, the entire country could have been ruined. He added that current investigations aim to bring all those involved—politicians, underworld figures, and smugglers—before the law, regardless of their status.

Joint police and military operations have already helped prevent many crimes. President Ranil Wickremesinghe has also emphasized the urgency of cracking down on narcotics. Special meetings led by the Prime Minister are being held in Colombo to address drug-related issues.

Wattagala added that even if suspects try to escape abroad for studies or medical treatment, they will still face justice.
