The Ministry of Transport is planning to significantly increase the validity period of driving licences, which is currently eight years, according to the Department of Motor Transport.

A technical evaluation committee has been appointed to study the matter and propose a suitable plan. Based on applicants’ age and physical fitness, the Ministry is considering extending the validity period of driving licences beyond the present eight years.

Particularly, for new applicants aged 40 and above and for those renewing licences, the validity may be extended to an appropriate duration.

However, Minister of Transport Bimal Ratnayake clarified that this is still only a proposal and not a final decision. He also confirmed that, even if implemented, the change will not apply to heavy vehicle drivers, who will still be required to renew their licences every three years.

Additionally, the Ministry is considering discontinuing the printing of the mandatory National Transport Medical Fitness Certificate required to obtain a driving licence. Instead, medical certificates will be transmitted to the Department of Motor Transport through an online digital system.
