Opposition unity is not for political gain; says Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa
29-Aug-2025.

The broad coalition being formed among opposition parties is solely for the purpose of addressing the problems faced by the people of the country, not for any political motive, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated.
Speaking to the media on August 27 after visiting former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital, Premadasa further noted:
“The coalition of opposition parties has not been formed for political objectives. We have united to provide solutions to the nation’s problems. The current government has no capacity to resolve them. Around 40,000 graduates remain unemployed despite promises of jobs.
Farmers face hardships due to the lack of fertilizer subsidies. Paddy farmers are unable to sell their harvests at a guaranteed price. Data shows that 50% of the country’s population live in poverty, while 71% are applying for the ‘Aswesuma’ welfare benefits.
The facilities for teaching at the Faculty of Medicine of Moratuwa University are still inadequate. Numerous issues exist across many sectors, and the government has not been able to resolve even a single one.
The prices of essential goods are skyrocketing. It is to find solutions to these pressing issues that we are building unity,” he said.
