Opposition Seeks Parliamentary Debate on Judiciary-Related Issues
25-Jun-2026.
The main Opposition party, the United People's Force (SJB), has requested Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne to hold a parliamentary debate on vacancies in the judiciary, delays in court proceedings, and the structural and administrative issues contributing to these problems.
A letter signed by Opposition Members of Parliament, seeking the debate under Standing Order 19(1) as a matter of urgent public importance, was handed over to the Speaker on June 23.
The letter states that the prevailing vacancies within the judiciary have created serious practical difficulties in carrying out the functions of judicial institutions efficiently, independently, and in a proper manner. As a result, the backlog of cases and delays in legal proceedings have increased significantly, while the public is being deprived of timely access to justice.
It further notes that the situation has adversely affected public confidence in the judicial system and is gradually developing into a serious social concern.
Accordingly, the Opposition has proposed that Parliament treat the matter as one requiring urgent attention and priority, and hold a debate on judicial vacancies, case delays, and the structural and administrative shortcomings responsible for them. It has also called for prompt and effective measures to be implemented to address these issues.
