“Only 20 percent of the proposals made in the 2025 Budget have been implemented. We request the government to fully release the allocations made to essential sectors such as education and health,” said J.C. Alawathuwala, MP of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

Speaking in Parliament on November 10 during the second day of the debate on the Second Reading of the 2026 Budget, he added:

“The Justice Minister says they took charge of a bankrupt country where people stood in queues for essential goods. He should be ashamed of treating people as fools and making such statements.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inherited a stabilised economy. Over this past year, how much progress has been made? This government is only continuing the same programs implemented by the previous administration. Do not think the people know nothing and keep repeating falsehoods.

They came to power criticising 76 years of political structures. What change have they brought? None. In presenting the 2026 Budget, they claim to have allocated large sums for education, health, agriculture, and transport.

But in reality, only 20 percent of last year’s proposals were implemented. We request that full allocations for essential sectors be released.

No direct relief has been given to micro, small, and medium enterprises suffering economically. The budget contains only fine words. The government must fulfil its promises at least next year.”
