There will be no shortage of essential food items in the country during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year season, and consumers need not panic, according to B. Subramaniam, Secretary of the Pettah Essential Goods Importers’ Association.

He said although many countries are facing import challenges due to global conditions, around 90% of food items are being imported from neighbouring India without disruption, ensuring sufficient stocks in the market.

He noted that due to the rise in the value of the US dollar and increased transport costs, prices of certain goods have slightly increased. Despite rising shipping charges and container rental costs, imports are continuing steadily.

He said there have been delays in the arrival of certain lentil varieties, but the situation is expected to normalise within the next two weeks.

He urged consumers not to purchase excessive quantities and stockpile goods due to fear of shortages, warning that unnecessary hoarding could create an artificial shortage and push prices further up. He advised the public to purchase only what is necessary.

He also stated that the Government is providing necessary cooperation to release goods from the port and distribute them islandwide. Weekly price lists are also being monitored to control prices, while measures are being taken to ensure product quality and stable supply.

He assured that consumers will be able to obtain required goods during the New Year season without any fear.
