No Administration Formed in Over 50 Local Councils

More than two months after local government elections, over 50 councils still lack functioning administrations.

The delays are attributed to non-participation of members, failure to publish member names in the Gazette, and court orders.

In some areas, including Vanathavilluwa, issues related to women’s representation have prevented administrative setup.

Reports suggest that over 50% of elected members have deliberately abstained from council meetings, disrupting governance and delaying services to the public, as per the Local Government Ministry.

Elections were held for 337 councils on May 6, 2025, with approximately 8,000 candidates contesting.
