New Year Should Strengthen National Unity and Prosperity: PM Amarasuriya

The true blessing of the New Year lies in forgetting differences and embracing a fresh beginning with brotherhood. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya stated that this New Year, celebrated by the entire nation united at one auspicious moment, should serve as a firm resolution towards the future prosperity of the country.

She made these remarks in her New Year greeting message issued to mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The message further notes:

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, celebrated with great pride by the people of Sri Lanka since ancient times, has dawned once again, marking the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries, the completion of harvest activities, and the beginning of the spring season in harmony with nature. The New Year is not merely a festival, but a renewal of prosperity, unity, coexistence, and mutual relationships embedded in our cultural values.

First and foremost, I pray that this New Year may bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to all Sri Lankans who celebrate it with their families and relatives, commencing auspicious activities at the auspicious time.

A special feature of this New Year is that the entire country unites under one rhythm, observing diverse cultural traditions and rituals at the same auspicious time. Amid various duties and challenges, this period offers us a valuable opportunity to move forward as one family and one nation with renewed hope and expectation.

The true blessing of the New Year lies in removing bitterness and divisions of the mind, and embracing a new beginning with brotherhood and friendship. Especially amid today’s global crises, the way we have courageously faced natural and economic challenges in the past as a nation stands as an example to the world. It is the responsibility of all of us to continue nurturing that collective strength.

At this auspicious moment, I respectfully remember all our brothers and sisters abroad who work with dedication for the future of their families and the nation. I especially pray for a safe and healthy future for all of you living across the world, including in the Middle East.

Let us overcome all obstacles and build a better and more prosperous nation with renewed thinking and firm determination. As partners in a major social and political transformation, let us work tirelessly towards a future where true happiness and peace will dawn for all.
