Justice and National Unity Minister, Attorney-at-law Harsha Nanayakkara, said the government will definitely fulfil its promise to the people to create a new constitution, and the drafting work is progressing efficiently.

He added:
“In the past, constitutional amendments were made to serve the government’s needs — the 22nd Amendment is a good example. The Sri Lankan constitution has many issues.
We have not forgotten our promise to create a new constitution reflecting the people’s aspirations. Preparatory steps have been taken to resolve existing constitutional issues through administrative structures.
Drafting cannot be rushed, as it must address the concerns of all parties. Opposition parties are calling for a parliamentary select committee on this, but we cannot proceed on their political agenda — only based on the people’s needs. We will definitely create the new constitution as promised.”
