Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated that despite following IMF recommendations, Sri Lanka remains in a dangerous economic phase, with poverty, inequality, and debt severely affecting the people.

Speaking at Catholic Independence Day services held on 4 February at All Saints’ Church in Borella, he stated that despite 78 years of independence, the nation has failed to realize its original vision of freedom.

He criticized unchecked globalization, erosion of domestic production, moral decline, and the marginalization of religious voices, warning that sustainable progress is impossible without ethical and spiritual foundations.
