Parliamentarian and National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Namal Rajapaksa, has accused the Inspector General of Police and the Police Media Spokesperson of functioning like media spokespeople for the current government and the JVP, instead of safeguarding the dignity of the Police Department.

He made these remarks while addressing a media briefing held in Colombo on Dec 27.

Rajapaksa stated that the reputation of the Police has been seriously undermined. He alleged that the government is using the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to shut down a private media institution simply because it broadcast police actions live. He described it as deeply concerning that the IGP is taking the lead in suppressing media freedom.

He urged the IGP not to act as a political shield for politicians, noting that when a police officer under his command was assaulted and imprisoned, no effort was made to protect that officer’s dignity.

Rajapaksa further alleged that government MPs who branded others as “thieves” and “drug dealers” have themselves been caught maintaining cannabis plantations. He claimed that supporters of these politicians, including representatives of teachers’ unions, have been arrested for selling drugs to schoolchildren.

He warned that selective enforcement of the law, protecting those in power while intimidating the media, poses a serious threat to democracy. Rajapaksa cautioned that if the government continues such repressive measures while claiming to uplift the country, it is the public who will ultimately bear the consequences.
